The Significance Of Addiction Counseling In Addiction Treatment
It is a huge challenge for anyone who is trying to beat an addiction to a prescription medication for pain. Opioids are very addictive drugs that are prescribed for pain. A person with an addiction to the substance will find that detoxification is just the first step in their battle. Drug counseling is an important part in the treatment of drug abuse.
Detox
There are many approaches to counseling that can be included in an individual therapy program. Once an individual has completed detox and the poison of the drug is gone from the body, they are ready to begin their treatment plan. Each persons plan is individualized to meet their specific needs. Often, there are several concerns that must be dealt with through treatment that are the result of their addiction.
Different Therapies
Typically, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT, and other therapies like family therapy is used to help the individual during their recovery. Psychotherapy may also be part of the plan to deal with mental health concerns contributing to the addiction. Psychological and social problems can often be strong motivating forces behind drug relapses.
Addiction
Unfortunately, even when the body is rid of the opioid and the is no longer physically dependent, there is a very high risk of relapsing. Temptations like spending time with those who are still addicted, going to a particular area in town, and life stress, can lead a person to start using again. Therapy will help the person learn new skills for coping with the stressors of life.
Treatment Plan
Several therapies can be used for individual treatment plans dealing with addiction. There is no one therapy method that is considered better than another. Likewise, there is no method that is right for every individual. There is no one size fits all therapy when it comes to opioid addiction. Each therapy plan is tailored to meet the needs of the individual client.
Support Programs
Group therapy sessions are typically preferred to one on one therapy. With group sessions individuals find support from their peers and will also be challenged by them. A twelve step program is a type of group therapy that is well known and cost nothing to attend. In these types of therapy groups individuals can feel comfortable talking with others who are going through the same thing they are.
Counseling
Private and individual therapy is more appropriate for people who have been dual diagnosed. A person may be dealing with a mental health disorder like depression or bipolar as well as addiction problem. It is important that therapy deals separately with the addiction to drugs and the mental health disorder.
Drug counseling can also be conducted on an intensive outpatient program basis or in a residential treatment center. While the residential programs are very expensive, they remove the individual from the environment that led to the addiction. There is an ongoing debate regarding which type of program is more successful long term. Regardless which program is used it is becoming more and more evident that drug counseling and maintenance therapies must be part of the individuals life to prevent relapse.
